FencingSolarpaddy have been carefully researching the needs of farmers across Western Europe. We have being carrying out several studies and have tested various systems in the field. Our conclusion is that a 20w monocrystalline solar panel is needed to ensure that a 2 joule fencer battery is kept fully charged and functional throughout all weather conditions. Feedback we have received suggests that a 1.5 joule fencer was needed to maintain the effectivness of the fence in periods of heavy growth and in damp conditions. Normally this size of fence was only feasible with mains supply or frequent battery changes and specialist deep cycle batteries. With a solar panel constantly recharging your 12volt battery it is now feasible to leave your fencer for extended periods with no maintenence.
Fences can be powered by cheap and locally sourced car batteries rather than expensive deep cycle batteries. The battery does not have to be very big as it is continually being topped up. Our fencer charging systems have a charge controller built in, this stops the battery from being overcharged during the height of the summer with long hours of sunshine for charging. This also increases the lifespan of the battery. The angle of the panel is critical to the operation, we have optimized the dimensions of the frame to give best results for the north European solar patterns. The expected life of a solar panel is over 20 years, structural parts of our assembly are made from aluminium and controllers are sheltered from the elements ensuring that Solarpaddy's systems will last a long time.
